SAFETY TIPS

CHEMICAL SPILLS

Many of our students, faculty and staff spend time in University of Michigan laboratories used for teaching and conducting research. Many of the chemicals used in these labs can be dangerous if improperly handled or stored. Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) provides further guidance for those who come in contact with such chemicals.

For your convenience, we’ve included some pertinent links to EHS below:

  • Storing chemical waste: Properly storing and disposing of hazardous waste is crucial to avoiding chemical spills. Here you will find guidance on how to store and dispose of chemical waste, low-level radioactive waste, biological waste and other waste such as batteries, bulbs and refrigerants.
  • Spill response: In the event that chemicals or chemical waste are spilled, it is important that everyone involved should know how to respond. The specific response will depend on the size of the spill, location and chemicals involved.
  • Collection and supplies: Here you will find information about how to contact EHS to request that hazardous waste be collected or storage supplies be delivered.

In the event of a chemical spill, please contact the Division of Public Safety and Security at 911.
