COMMUNITY-ORIENTED PATROLS

Security Officer Baldwin talks with a staff member. In order to proactively manage safety and security issues within the health system, the Michigan Medicine Security department implemented a Community-Oriented Patrol program (COP). COP brings security officers together with Michigan Medicine faculty and staff to identify, evaluate and address safety and security issues.

What is Community-Oriented Patrol?

COP is a philosophy originally designed by police departments, which Michigan Medicine Security has adapted to our unique healthcare environment. Security officers are assigned to Michigan Medicine units and departments and work as a liaison to collaborate and resolve concerns.

How can Michigan Medicine faculty and staff work with COP officers?

Officers can not be everywhere all the time, so we largely rely on the Michigan Medicine community to provide information regarding safety and security concerns. To help facilitate information sharing, COP officers assigned to your unit or department should be considered a member of your team. Officers welcome the opportunity to be included in your staff meetings, new employee orientations and department updates.

COP officers should be considered a team resource with whom you can consult with regarding safety and security issues, such as disruptive family members, suspicious behaviors and much more. Here are additional ways in which you can integrate your department's COP officer into your team:

  • Assign a point person from your team (such as a charge nurse) to meet daily with your COP officer
  • Invite your COP officer to your staff meetings
  • Schedule periodic meetings to discuss ongoing security issues
  • Maintain email contact for non-urgent security concerns and questions

In addition, COP officers can provide training sessions on various topics, such as:

  • Non-violent crisis intervention
  • Active attacker (Code Silver)
  • Autism awareness
  • Security assessments
  • Emergency planning
