CRIME & SAFETY DATA

CRIME STATISTICS

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is committed to transparency and providing reliable crime information to the U-M community, which can be invaluable when you make decisions that affect your safety.

Classification of information

Incidents and criminal reports are classified using categories defined by federal and state agencies that require regular reports of crime data. The state of Michigan uses categories from the Michigan Incident Crime Reporting (MICR) system that collects and publishes crime data for all law enforcement agencies in Michigan. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education (DoE) requires U.S. colleges and universities to collect and report crime data for their respective campuses. This requirement is commonly known as the Clery Act.

The comprehensive report of crime on campus is contained within the Annual Security Report and Annual Fire and Safety Report. Crime statistics from previous years can be accessed below.

The crime data presented here uses the terms and requirements of the Clery Act. Clery Act definitions are taken from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Uniform Crime Reporting Handbook (UCR).
